1. Participants and team leadership:
We have been meeting once/week and generally have about 10-15 students attend each time. Most of the kids are sophomores and juniors. Benjamin Yarmowich is the Team Captain. Katie Krantz is now the Team Treasurer. Ethan Goldfarb is the Chief Engineer. Davis Rackley is the Chief Safety Officer.
2. The Lovett Roarbotics Team Logo/ and Sweatshirts Status: The design of the team logo is almost complete. The logo will eventually be used on the team t-shirts. The sweatshirts: We have spoken to the campus store and the sweatshirt will say: “Lovett Robotics.” They will be 1/2 zip fleece with the writing near the top left shoulder. We anticipate that they will be ordered in the next week.
3. Financials:
· We are excited to announce that the Lovett Roarbotics were awarded the FRC National Rookie Grant, which provides a $4,000 grant, towards the registration for this year and another $2,000 for next year.
· We applied for the NASA Grant and are still awaiting their decision (approx. mid December timing) for the $5,000-$6,000: The funds will be used towards FIRST membership and to purchase robotic supplies and miscellaneous expenses.
· The Lovett Team is registered for the 2015 FRC season, using $2,000 of the teams finances and $4000 from the rookie grant.
· We (Paul Kim and Benjamin Yarmowich with Ms. Deisley) attended Biz Con (Business Conference) at Westminster and learned a lot about funding a robotics program and initiating outreach programs.
4. Our First Outreach Project:
The Robotics team is currently building a t-shirt cannon for use at Lovett Sports events. We are building this from scratch; we designed the plans and purchased the materials from Home Depot. We hope to have this ready so that it can be used for the Winter sports. Once it is complete, we will discuss with Athletics department.
5. FIRST Competition: GRITS (http://www.gafirst.org/index.php/events/frc/grits)
The Lovett Roarbotics participated at the GRITS competition in early October, supervised by Mr. Wingate and Ms. Deisley.
We participated in 5 qualifying rounds. The top 4 teams selected three partners to form an alliance. We were invited by the Peachtree Ridge Team to join them and North Atlanta High School’s team. Our alliance won the semi-final matches. However, we lost in the finals against Westminster’s alliance. (Westminister’s team is highly nationally ranked).
NEXT STEPS:
Mid-December: Learn if we are being awarded the NASA grant
Saturday January 3, 2015: Kit Kick-off.
The game and the rules change every year. FIRST will announce the name of the game and the rules and will provide all registered teams with starting materials. The “building” season officially starts and teams will start building a new robot that meets this year’s requirements.
Month of January: Robotics team will be meeting daily after school in the WinCave (CC305/Maker's Space) to construct a competition-ready robot with the help of Ms. Wilson and Mr. Amar.
Early February: National rules dictate that the Robotics team have the robot completely finished and sealed by early February. Our competition, however, is not until March.
February-March: Meetings will continue before the first competition, with a focus on strategy and planning for the next year.
